Nazrul Islam is known as the revolutionary poet of Bengal. He was born on 24 May, 1899 at Churulia, a village in the district of Burdwan. His father was Fakir Ahmed and mother Jaheda Khatun. Being a son of a poor family, Najrul had to struggle hard in life. He served as a boy- servant in a baker’s shop and as the cook of a railway guard. Later he joined the army as a Habildar during the First World War. Najrul wrote many poems, songs and essays. ‘Agnibina’, ‘Bidrohi’, ‘Bisher Banshi’, ‘Sarbahara’, ‘Amar Kaifiyat’ etc. are some of his famous poems. He got Jagattarini Gold medal for his literary works. Later he was awarded Padmabhusan. The great revolutionary poet died on 29 August, 1976 in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. But his poems still inspire us.
